International Women's Day in Oaxaca

Women's Poetry Jam tonight!
Oaxaca is a city where special days are recognized! Almost any day of the year, a visitor to the city will find a celebration. Today is International Women's Day and a stage is being erected on the pedestrian street.

Most of the photographs that I viewed dealt with domestic abuse. The Ministry of Women is working
to promote better educational opportunities and more programs to develop self-esteem in younger women.

On a more positive note, tonight there are art exhibitions, a poetry jam and a symphonic concert celebrating women. I can hear a parade passing at this moment.

In the  century since Women's Day was first acknowledged in Europe, there has been improvement
in social and economic conditions for some women in some countries. In Canada, the women who
work in service and childcare do not earn a living wage.  Often they lack job security and benefits.
We may have "come a long way, baby" but there is a long way to go!
